約100年前、アメリカの医師が人の死の前後の体重を測定し、魂の重さを確かめようとした実験から、「魂の重さは21g」という逸話が生まれました。

目に見えない「魂」という存在を具象化し、その重さも含めて鑑賞する展覧会にしたいと考え、すべての作品の重量を21gに統一しました。

展示終了後、購入者のもとへ作品を発送することで、手にしたときに改めてその軽さを感じてもらえるようにしました。

会期中には、歴史学者・作家の磯田道史氏を迎え、「魂」をテーマにしたトークショーを行いました。

About a century ago, an American physician conducted an experiment weighing people before and after death in an attempt to determine the weight of the human soul. From this experiment came the widely known story that the soul weighs 21 grams.

Seeking to give physical form to the invisible presence of the “soul”—and to make its weight part of the experience of the exhibition—Matsubara made every work weigh exactly 21 grams.

After the exhibition, the works were sent to their purchasers, allowing them to experience their surprising lightness once again by holding them in their own hands.

During the exhibition, Matsubara also held a talk on the theme of the “soul” with historian and author Michifumi Isoda.
