Sorin Tea Gathering
April 5, 11, 2026
@Saito (Setagaya, Tokyo)
A tea gathering created in response to Saito’s modern space, where Japanese and Western elements coexist. A reversible hanging scroll from the exhibition transformed the café area at the back into a temporary tea room.
Sorin prepared tea in the ryurei style, while a handmade sekimori-ishi placed on the counter marked the boundary between the guests and the preparation area.
The sweets were buckwheat galettes made by Miharu, the owner of Saito. Tea utensils were provided with the cooperation of Sanno Hachi.

March 8, 2026
@uramichi(神奈川、大磯)
Sorin Tea Gathering: Enso (cerchio)
March 8, 2026
@uramichi (Oiso, Kanagawa)
Developed from “A Sensory Experience of Tea and Shitsurae,” previously presented in Turin, Italy, this tea gathering brought together the experience of tasting tea, encountering artworks and utensils, and inhabiting a carefully composed space.
At its center was a hanging scroll conceived by Sorin and first presented in Turin. Its relief collage could be detached and replaced using magnets, allowing the image within the scroll to change. For the flowers traditionally placed in a tea room, Matsubara placed plum buds in the hand of one of her Buddha sculptures and suspended it in the space.
Artworks, utensils, sweets, and the garden were composed as a single setting, with Sorin (Rie Matsubara) preparing tea in the ryurei style. The utensils included Matsubara’s own works alongside antique objects from Sanno Hachi. Sweets were created by Chiisana Daidokoro using vegetables from uramichi FARM, and the garden was arranged by Sadamoriya.
Conceived as an experiential experiment in tea, the gathering departed slightly from the conventions of a traditional tea gathering. By entering a setting in which each element carried intention, and experiencing tea and sweets within it, guests were invited to discover whether something might change—or perhaps remain unchanged.

Cerchio(円相)茶会ワークショップ
June 29-30, 2025
@camellia(トリノ、イタリア)
Cerchio (Enso)Tea Gathering & Workshop
June 29-30,2025
@camellia (Turin, Italy)
For many years, the practice of tea and the making of art had been connected in Matsubara’s thinking, yet bringing the two together in a physical form had never felt entirely resolved. Through this exhibition and tea workshop at camellia, the two practices finally came together.
Working outside Japan also offered a certain freedom from the strict conventions of traditional tea practice, allowing Matsubara to place greater emphasis on her own understanding of the philosophy of tea.
Alongside the exhibition, Sorin presented for the first time a hanging scroll of her own design, with a relief collage that could be detached and replaced using magnets. Artworks, utensils, shitsurae, and tea were brought together as a single experience through a tea gathering and workshop.
The project was produced by Ezio of camellia. Sayaka Miyamoto contributed to the production, prepared the sweets, and interpreted Matsubara’s words for the participants.
This experience became the starting point for Sorin’s subsequent practice.

Katsurao Daijin Residence Site: Takigi Noh & Tea Project
September 28, 2019
@Katsurao Daijin Residence Site (Katsurao, Fukushima)
From the Edo through the Meiji period, the prosperous Matsumoto family was known as the “Katsurao Daijin.” Their residence had a history of hosting Noh and Kyogen performances for the lords of the Miharu and neighboring domains.
After being inaccessible following the Great East Japan Earthquake, the historic site became the setting for a Takigi Noh performance organized by a local committee. The project sought to reconnect people with the history and cultural traditions of Katsurao while creating new encounters and exchanges.
Alongside the Noh performance, a tour of historic sites and a tea gathering were held. Rie Matsubara created an interactive art installation for these events, facing the historic pond. The structure evoked both the entrance to a Shinto shrine and a traditional Japanese shooting-gallery stall. When a visitor rang a bell, smoke appeared and the “Katsurao Daijin” began to tell the story of his own history. The installation was fabricated with the cooperation of Haryu Wood Studio.
Students from the College of Engineering, Nihon University, helped construct the Noh stage and assisted with serving guests during the tea gathering.
This early exploration of tea, art, place, and gathering became one of the origins of what would later develop into Sorin.
